Russian warships carrying "special cargo" are on their way to Syria , says a navy source on Friday, September 6. Kremlin is hoping to assert its position in the region ahead of possible US action against the Damascus regime.
While the source did not specify the exact nature of the "special cargo," it is known that Russia has lingered along Eastern Mediterranean shores during the Syrian crisis. Reports of increased Russian presence in the area have only served to heighten fears of larger international conflicts, especially if the United States orders airstrikes in response to the chemical attack of last month, where hundreds, if not thousands, of people perished from gas poisoning, corpses piling up in hospitals.
Tension has been high between Putin and Obama, with the former's spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters at the G-20 Summit that the United States should be more patient with the reports of United Nations Inspectors who had gone to Syria for a series of investigations into the chemical attacks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has found Washington's supposed evidence of the Syrian Regime's involvement in the chemical attacks was not persuasive enough, while Obama has continually been garnering support for military action from other government officials.
Meanwhile, Kremlin's Chief of Staff has quickly released a statement to quell fears of heavier military presence in Damascus, by saying that Russia had instead been sending its warships to the Mediterranean Sea for the possibility of evacuating Russian citizens in Syria.
Russian News agencies have quoted Sergei Ivanov on Thursday, for saying that the added military presence was more for the reassurance of several nervous Russian citizens who are living among the Syrian unrest.
However, political analysts fear that this may not be the case. Russia has been among Syrian leader Bashar Assad's most loyal allies during the Civil War that has been waging since 2011.
