The long-awaited release of PlayStation 4 (PS4) put a million consoles into the hands of eager North American consumers over the course of 24 hours on Nov. 15th. That number is in keeping with SONY’s public pre-order estimates. Despite the robust sales, gamers are complaining about a few core problems with the units and making it known across the web.
One day after the release, SONY issued a new troubleshooting guide to address the unit's reported problems. In an official statement, SONY put the number of affected consoles at roughly .04 percent.
The biggest problem reported by consumers is a blinking blue light which gamers have termed the Blue Line of Death. If functionally normally, the PS4’s side LED indicator light should flash blue and then go to white. This signals that the console is being read by your TV. In the malfunctioning units, this light simply blinks blue for a few moments and then shuts the system down.
SONY’s troubleshooting guide suggests that it could be either a hardware or a software problem and offers four possible solutions. If none of the suggested solutions solve the problem, return it for repair as SONY moving quickly to address this problem for their consumers.
There is also the red light problem which owners are detailing on various tech and gaming websites. SONY has yet to publicly address this reported issue. While the number of people experiencing the problem is not as great, its effect on the ability to use the console is essentially the same. In this instance, the indicator light blinks red several times, sounds three beeps and shuts the system down. This problem is most likely connected to a faulty fan and overheating of the unit.
Despite these initial problems, SONY expresses satisfaction with the launch as it has seen higher sales that the previous two PlayStation consoles. PS4 is set to launch in Latin America and Europe this Friday.
