As 'Maleficent' is set to debut on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in various locations overseas, Disney is eyeing for a $60 million dollars in gross ticket sales on opening day. In true 'Maleficent' fashion, Disney aims to recoup its $175-million investment into the film by May 30, 2014.
'Maleficent' is Disney's latest princess-fairytale themed production after 'Frozen' which was received with positive reviews. Disney's recent classic re-imaginings include 2013's "Oz, the Great and Powerful" and 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" starring Johnny Depp. Only the former failed to impress audience overseas, but the losses were handsomely recovered by last year's 'Frozen'.
With Angelina Jolie in the lead role, 'Maleficent' should have no trouble making the top of the charts before the week ends. 'Maleficent' is Jolie's latest project as an actress after action-sleeper spy thriller, 'Salt', and 'The Tourist' where she starred alongside Johnny Depp. Recently, the mom of 6 has been dabbling in film production and directing. Her 2011 film, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," where she handled writing, directing, and producing duties, was positively received.
Angelina, however, is not the only Jolie to appear in the film. Her daughter with actor Brad Pitt, Vivienne, will play the younger versions of Princess Aurora, the protagonist of the film while the elder Aurora will be played by Elle Fanning.
'Maleficent' is a film of firsts, not just for Vivienne Pitt-Jolie, but also for Robert Stromberg, the film's director. His previous projects include being the production designer of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Oz, the Great and Powerful"; "Maleficent" is his first directorial venture.
The film is set to open on 28 May 2014, Wednesday, in most territories overseas, except India, Japan, Mexico, where the film will open sometime in July, and the US, where 'Maleficent' is scheduled to open on the 30th of May.
Meanwhile, the iconic song titled, "Once Upon A Dream" has been revived by vintage-inspired songstress, Lana Del Rey. "Once Upon A Dream" by Del Rey will also appear on the 'Maleficent' OST.
