A pregnant woman was killed by her own family for marrying the man that she loved in Pakistan.
The woman was stoned to death on her way to the courthouse where her family had initiated an abduction case. Her father was immediately arrested and the detective who investigated the case, police investigator Rana Mujahid said, that the police has been working hard to understand the reasons behind this "heinous crime."
Arranged marriages are a common practice among Pakistanis, and there are numerous women who have been killed in the so called ''honor killings'' conducted by relatives and husbands because women have committed adultery or other type of behavior that has violated the moral rules of their culture.
However, this specific crime case, in the form of a stoning in a public area, is a rarity even in the Pakistanese culture. The attack from Tuesday demonstrates a very extreme case of violence. The crime was committed in front of numerous onlookers.
A police officer, Naseem Butt, has already provided information on the woman. Her name is Farzana Parveen and she is 25. She had married Mohammad Iqbal, 45, after being engaged to him for several years. The woman had married against her family's will.
Her father, Mohammad Azeem, had alread filed an abduction case against Iqbal. He said that his daughter was three months pregnant.
Around 20 members of Parveens family have united forced and started beating her with bricks from a nearby building until she was stoned to death. During the whole time, she had shown resistance but the family members were relentless
Iqbal said he started dating Parveen after the death of his first wife. He has 5 more children with his wife.
"We were in love," he told The Associated Press. He alleged the family of the stoned woman wanted money from him before he could marry her.
