For filing a formal complaint against her daughter's rapists, an Indian rape victim's mother has been attacked. On May 11, two girls believed to be cousins, were found hanged from a tree in the village of Katra in Uttar Pradesh. Later investigations showed that the girls aged 14 and 15 years were brutally raped and murdered before being suspended from the branch of a mango tree.
According to police in Uttar Pradesh, the Indian rape victim's mother was attacked by three men after it was discovered that she filed a formal rape complaint against her daughter and niece's rapists. It is not known whether her attackers were directly involved in the rape, but police have ascertained that the attackers were related to the rapists. The rape victim's mother filed her complaint in Etawah, a town near Katra where the crime was committed.
Police have arrested three men, all of whom were related to the accused rapists: one was a father, another was a brother, and the third was a cousin of an accused rapist. Police reports say that the five men followed the rape victim's mother to her home and beat her when she refused to withdraw her case. Three have been arrested by police and search is ongoing for the other two attackers.
Meanwhile, the rape victim's mother has been brought to a local hospital for treatment. She suffered cuts and bruises to the face, broken bones, and several internal injuries. Whether the mother also intends to file a case against her attackers has not yet been confirmed.
The woman's daughter and her niece were discovered in the morning of May 11, 2014 hanging from a mango tree. The girls, whose names are not released under Indian law, were reported missing since Tuesday. It is believed they were abducted and attacked by seven men, five of whom have been captured, while they were in a secluded area of a nearby field to relieve themselves since their homes did not have toilets.
