The internet world has been abuzz since the beginning of the week with news about the launch of a new social media service exclusively for rich people.
Netroplitan has been described as an exclusive online country club for the rich. The team behind this elite hangout insists that it is not a prank of any kind. The site's server is alleged to have crashed when it went live for the first time on Tuesday.
Joining the 'Facebook' for rich people is relatively easy; Netroplitan neither has a vetting process nor specific requirements for potential member. However, all members must be 21-years and older and can afford the exorbitant fees.
Reports indicate that all members of the site are required to pay a start-up fee of $9,000, which includes $6,000 for 'initiation' and an annual fee of $3,000.
The management of the new social media hub has revealed that the privacy of its members would be stringently protected. A statement from the company notes that "Other than announcing that at our launch that we already had several hundred members, we will never publicly state the exact number of members in the club. And especially, we will NEVER release or verify the identity of any of our members - ever."
Many experts say the main perk for members of the site is the opportunity to safely hangout in a global community of affluent and accomplished people who share similar interests and lifestyles.
Netroplitan was created by James Touchi-Peters, who is a composer, performer and former conductor of the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra. According to Mr. Touchi-Peters, the hub was inspired by a personal need to find a safe environment where one can talk about the finer things in life without fear of a "backlash".
He told CNN "I believe there is a need and an audience for this service."
