The second day of the 2014 Ryder Cup is underway with the Americans trying to move on from a Day 1 collapse and keep the competition competitive despite the European's afternoon surge on PGA Centenary Course at the Gleneagles Hotel near Auchterarder in Perthshire, Scotland.

The Americans started the 40th edition of the Ryder Cup on a strong note, as Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley led the charge in the foursomes. Unfortunately, the Yankees could not sustain their strong start, and the Europeans pounced on it at the right time.

"For our guys to react the way they did, for all four matches to be up after six holes - there was blue on the board for every single match - was a terrific response," Europe captain Paul McGinley said in the post-game interview.

"It shows a huge amount of character that we have on the team, huge amount of talent that we can come out with such strong pairings in the afternoon and a great response and resilience."

Meanwhile, the partnership of world's no.3 Sergio Garcia and world's no.1 Rory McIlroy earned a halve in a game which they could have easily secured a point and padded the Europeans' lead more.

Despite the Americans' wobbling start at the Ryder Cup, team captain Tom Watson is confident his boys can overcome the deficit with better game on the second day of the tourney.

"It's 5-3. That's two matches," Watson said. "You win two matches, you're back to even. You win four, you're up by two. That's the way this Ryder Cup works, and that's the reality of it. I have to say, I'm good with it."
