East Ukraine Crisis Continues As Fighting Between Pro-Russian Rebels And Ukrainian Government Intensified

Despite a ceasefire declared a month ago between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian rebels, the biggest city in eastern Ukraine remains entrapped in fighting. Defense officials said Tuesday that there had been no respite in efforts by separatist fighters in the east to seize the airport in Donetsk City.
Security spokesperson Andriy Lysenko said that pro-Russian militants fired on the terminal from tanks, weaponry systems and multiple rocket launchers. The new terminal airport which European soccer fans used in 2012 to reach some of the matches that hosted by Ukraine sits some 10 kilometers or 6 miles from the center of the city.
A ceasefire that supposedly came into effect one month ago has been regularly defied, with substantial bombarding focused in the area around Donetsk airport. Fighting has also been reported in numerous parts of Eastern Ukraine.
NewsAdvance.com reported that a US diplomat visiting Ukraine called for an end on the airport attack and for aggressions to be put off on other nearby towns. The assaulted airport remained under the government's control. US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland commanded that foreign armed forces be pulled out of Ukraine.
As reported by Newsweek, over 3,500 people have been killed in the Eastern Ukraine fighting and the breakdown of the airport's terminal and control tower from heavy gunfire is an outstanding representation of the crumbling of the country and its visions for closer ties with Western Europe.
Pro-Russian rebels now control large parts of the Donetsk region and that of Luhansk, a city in Eastern Ukraine near the Russian border where another separatist "People's Republic" was declared.
While the airport does not bear direct strategic importance for the rebels without any inflight strength, the terminal's nearness to their key stronghold is regarded as possibly destabilizing their lasting security objectives.
As the fighting continues in Eastern Ukraine, Donetsk City officials reported Monday that four civilians were killed and several residential structures were often struck as a result of shooting battles. And because of this, separatists and government authorities frequently trade accusations over who is responsible for the civilian casualties.
During the ongoing Eastern Ukraine fighting on Tuesday, Associated Press reporters witnessed rebels shooting artilleries from the top floor of a largely abandoned nine-story apartment overlooking the airport. The rebel fighters have been watched launching weaponry strikes from locations within residential areas, provoking hasty reactions from Ukrainian forces that frequently miss their target and hit houses. Rebels accuse the government troops of unjustified and illogical assaults on the civilian population.
Since the heavy clashes began, Ukraine has sought for a comprehensive range of foreign support, which includes military aid.
While fighting in most part of eastern Ukraine has been pacified by a month-old ceasefire, the intensified relentless attacks at the airport near Donetsk had changed the gleaming representation of the country's Western integration into a devastated reflection of its future visions.
