Floyd Mayweather Jr Faces Off With Manny Pacquiao?!
By Staff Reporter | Oct 11, 2014 10:13 AM EDT
Speculations about a potential faceoff between boxing champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have recently intensified. Sparking more rumors was the statement given by Mayweather's dad, Floyd Mayweather Sr., but what will happen if the much-awaited super fight will transpire?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are undeniably two of the best athletes in the boxing world and their potential showdown is highly anticipated. However, Mayweather Jr. has not disclosed his plans for 2015, and Pacquiao has to defend his welterweight title on Nov. 22 in Macau against Chris Algieri.
According to Los Angeles Times, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is currently on vacation, while Pacquiao still has a world title defense next month, but the rumors about a potential battle have increased. This is because of a statement given by Floyd Mayweather Sr. to Fighthype.com stating that he believes his son wants Pacquiao to be his next opponent.
"Man, I'm pretty sure that if don't nothing else happen, I'm pretty sure he's gonna get Pacquiao... it's gonna happen. That fight's gonna happen. Trust me. That fight's definitely gonna happen," Mayweather Sr.'s statement according to Ben Thompson of Fighthype.com.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. also said that his son never told that the fight was in his plans, but with his son's retirement after finishing two fights left on his six-fight Showtime deal, he believes all signs point to the potential faceoff with Pacquiao, as stated on an ESPN Sports report.
The 35-year-old boxing champ Pacquiao has held world titles in eight separate weight divisions. He is currently on training to defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight title against another undefeated American, Chris Algieri, in Macau in November. Meanwhile, 37-year-old Mayweather Jr., the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association super welterweight and light-middleweight champion, pushed his record to 47-0 with a lopsided point's victory over Marcos Maidana in a Las Vegas rematch last month.
Since 2009, there had been several on-again, off-again talks about a possible Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao clash. However, the two titans have fallen apart over drug testing, purse splits and personal grudges.
Two days after Mayweather Sr.'s statement, Fox Sports reported that Floyd Mayweather Jr. got on the phone to disprove those remarks and said that his father was wrong.
"Well my father is totally wrong. Like I said before, we have people constantly being removed from the Mayweather Promotions team, Team Mayweather, and we also have people being removed from The Money Team. I want my dad to be with my team, but if he continues to go out there and speak on things that he has no knowledge about without communicating with me, then I must get a new trainer," Mayweather Jr. said on Fighthype.com.
The potential Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. super fight is capable of heightening boxing's popularity significantly. However, the future Hall of Fame fighters can't seem to agree on much of anything to help bring this long-awaited faceoff to emerge.
