Canada shooting spree - A group of unidentified gunmen have laid siege to Canada's parliament building in Ottawa on Wednesday. Reports indicate that the gunmen killed one soldier who was guarding the National War Memorial before moving on to Parliament Hill.
Eyewitnesses say the gunman, who had a scarf over his mouth and nose, shot the soldier at point-blank range, before putting his rifle up in celebration.
Several building in the area - including the Parliament Hill - has been reportedly put on lock down by law enforcement operatives in light of the Canada shooting spree.
According to the Globe And Mail, gunshots have been heard from inside the halls of the parliament building. The Daily Mail has revealed that journalists hiding inside the building have confirmed that they also heard the shots and smelt gunpowder.
Local sources say at least two other officers sustained injuries during the Canada shooting spree at Parliament Hill. It is currently unclear how many the gunmen are involved in the attack. One of the gunmen has since been shot by a soldier who is part of a team that responded to the emergency calls from the building. Meanwhile, pundits say at least one accomplice of the shooter is still on the run.
Canada is regarded as one of the prime targets of Islamic extremists for many reasons. Earlier in the month, the country opted to support the US-led airstrike campaign against the Islamic State. The Prime Minister, who was reportedly evacuated from Parliament Hill shortly after the Canada shooting spree incident began, is reported to have been scheduled to present an honorary Canadian citizenship to Pakistani female education activist Malala Yousafzai.
Ottawa police have released a statement confirming the details of the Canada shooting spree. However, they denied any shooting at the Rideau Shopping Center as many reports have speculated.
