Megan Mahoney - A former gym instructor and assistant basketball coach of a New York high school has on Monday been arrested on several counts of statutory rape for allegedly having sexcapades with an under-aged male student.
The 24-years-old former teacher at an esteemed Catholic High School faces 30 counts of statutory rape and 4 counts of criminal sexual act.
Staten Island police reports indicate that the former girls' basketball assistant coach had sexual relations with the student - who was then only 16-years-old - over a period of three months between Oct 2013 and Jan 2014.
It is believed that the pair started getting intimate after Megan Mahoney approached and offered to teach the student basketball during a gym session.
The two were reportedly spotted getting cozy at a local pizza restaurant by the unidentified teen's former girlfriend.
Reports indicate that some of the rendezvous between Meagan Mahoney and the student happened "on numerous occasions" on school premises.
The boy, who admitted that he doesn't "really know how to feel about" the whole incident, has reportedly been expelled from school. But school authorities insist that his subsequent dismissal had nothing to do with the illicit relationship he had with Meagan Mahoney.
If she is found guilty, the High School teacher could face time behind bars. Legal expert say there is a real possibility of this since every count she has been leveled with holds a maximum jail term of about four years.
Megan Mahoney was reportedly a popular student athlete, who played basketball for Fordham University and Wagner College. She has since been released on bail with a scheduled court appearance on Dec. 2nd.
The school in question, which was formed in 1962 by a group of nuns, is allegedly being investigated for multiple cases of inappropriate sexual relations between students and teachers.
Besides Megan Mahoney, the NYPD is reportedly investigating Richard Postiglione, the schools chief operating officer and athletic director of the school, for failing to report other instances of illicit sexual relations between teachers and students. Postiglione and the school's principal are believed to have been aware of these activities, since they were brought to their attention as early as 2006.
