Giant gold nugget found in California - The famous Butte nugget, which is allegedly the biggest gold discovery in the historic Gold Country of Northern California in recent times, has gone on sale on Thursday, Oct. 22nd at an auction in San Francisco.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, at the San Francisco all Antiquities Show last night there was widespread interest in the giant gold nugget found in California's Butte County in July.
One local who was present at the auction told the publication that "I heard about it this morning, and I just had to come see it."
Another woman explained the significance of the giant gold nugget found in California saying "There's gold and then there's gold...But there is nothing like that nugget anywhere."
Dealer Don Kagin has revealed that the owner of the 6.07 pounds giant gold nugget found in California has requested for his identity and the location of the find not to be divulged to the public.
Kagin, who was recently duped in a similar transaction, insists that this nugget is for real. Numismatist, David McCarthy, has also noted that he is convinced the giant gold nugget found in California is genuine. He revealed that his decision to authenticate the Butte nugget is based on an analysis of the admittedly 'rugged' site of the find.
Many giant gold nuggets have been found in California since the 18th century. But pundits say it has been many decades since a sizeable nugget was found in Butte County.
McCarthy, who has disclosed that up to four buyers have shown interest in the Butte nugget, says he thinks it will likely be sold to a buyer in about three months.
Despite the recent giant gold nugget found in California, gold prospecting is actually illegal in the state. Reports indicate that the unidentified owner of the Butte nugget found it on private property.
