Shooting at Delaware school - A Delaware State University student was shot at an off campus residence near the college on Monday. The incident led to a lock-down of the school's main campus for a few hours.

Reports indicate that the shooting at the Delaware school occurred around 4:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the University's Living and Learning Commons building.

Gun shots were reportedly fired in the former Dover Sheraton hotel building, which is now used as an off-campus residence hall and student meeting place. The building is located about half a mile north of the college.

Dover authorities put the school on lock-down shortly after the shooting at the Delaware school was reported. Lecturers and students were informed of the lock-down via text messages. Classes were also canceled and everyone was asked to remain indoors.

Delaware University spokesman Carlos Holmes said in a statement that the lock-down was lifted after 3 hours. Holmes explained that was done after security officials established that there was no immediate threat following the shooting at the Delaware school.

DSU President Harry L. Williams also said in a statement that an investigation has been open into the incident by the police. He reiterated that the administration's paramount priority is student safety.

Dover police spokeswoman Kay Sass said preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting at the Delaware school is an isolated incident. She said the shooter had escaped and is still at large.

No arrests have been made thus far. The police are still investigating the incident and searching for the suspect.

Kass said that the only victim of the shooting at the Delaware school is a male student, who sustained non-life threatening injuries. He has since been taken to a medical center.

The shooting at the Delaware school is reportedly being investigated by the Dover police and campus police.

The shooting at the Delaware school is not the first such incident DSU has been confronted with. In Sept. 2007, two students were shot on the school's campus. The incident also caused the school to be locked-down. One student died while another survived the campus shooting. A freshman - Loyer D. Braden - was later arrested and charged with the shooting although the charges. But the charges were dropped as the court ruled in his favor after discovering that prosecutors withheld valuable evidence.
