Equestrian Athina Onassis forced to put her horse to death after show jumping accident, People reported.
Onassis decided to euthanize her horse Camilla Z after it sustained a broken leg due to a show jumping accident. In an annual show in Swuterland, Onassis' horse missed a jump and both of them fell down.
The equestrian did not obtain any injury from the fall, however, she cried when she saw her injured horse. It took several men and a crane to remove the animal from the location.
The horse was bought into a veterinary facility by an ambulance. Camilla Z was tranquilized and examined. Results came and showed that the injuries are severe and untreatable.
As a way to end the horse's suffering, Onassis decided to euthanize the white mare, according to Greek Reporter.
Onassis' horse Camilla Z is her companion in competitions since 2013. The equestrian and her husband Olympic rider Alvaro "Doda" Affonso de Miranda Neto travels and performs together.
As horse enthusiasts, they maintain stables in Sao Paolo, Florida and Belgium. The couple competed in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping Finals in Barcelona. Onassis got the 57th spot while her husband landed the 24th place.
Onassis focuses on her equestrian career rather than maintaining her wealth and fame as the sole heiress of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. The heiress is the only child of Christina Onassis, who died in 1988, Daily Mail UK reported.
Upon her mother's death, Onassis was raised by her French pharmaceutical heir father Thiery Rousell. Although she was born with the legal name Rousell, the heiress changed it to De Miranda after getting married and added Onassis later on.
Legal battles over the control of the inheritance troubled the athlete. The fights made her retreat and choose a quiet life with her husband and their horses.
Onassis' last completion with Camilla Z was on December 7 at the Gucci Paris Masters in France.
