"The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies'"earned $117.6 million over the weekend, Deadline reported.

The third installment of "The Hobbit" franchise surpassed the record of its predecessors.  The $117.6 million sales came from a total of 15,000 screens and 37 markets in the international scene.

The film also gained $6.4 million in IMAX sales, which topped the $5.03 million of "The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey." This is considered as the best milestone for IMAX records.

"The Hobbit" grossed 19.5 million in Germany and hailed as the best opening weekend. In the UK, the movie earned a whopping $15.5 million.

In France, weekend estimates reached up to $14.5 million. Russia recorded $13.4 million box office sales and branded as the biggest Warner Bros. opening weekend. Brazil earned $6.9 million from Friday to Sunday while Mexico had $6.4 million, Forbes reported.

The movie was number one in Japan and earned $2.46 million. It was also the biggest opening ever for New Zealand with $1.8 million sales. Scandinavian region is not far off the list with a record of $14.84 million.

Opposite of the box office positive sales, the "The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies" reviews are not so promising. Since, this is the last installment of the trilogy, fans have expected so much from the film, according to the Inquisitr.

Mike Kermode from the Guardian shared his take on the last movie.  Kermode wrote:

"Fans of the first two Hobbit movies may not be disappointed by this final installment, which offers few departures from the formula of yore, but those who remember the risks Jackson took with Bad Taste, Braindead, Heavenly Creatures and even his reboot may find themselves wishing for more than just more of the same."

Meanwhile, Kat Hall from The Register has good things to say about the effects and the cast. Hall wrote:

"There are a few pleasing nods to the Lord of the Rings here, both thematically and literally. I absolutely loved the spectacle of Smaug turning round to face the audience in 3D. And although the script itself leaves something to be desired, the likes of Ian Mckellen, Cate Blanchett and Ian Holm are all predictably fantastic."

"The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies" will be released in Italy, Spain and Korea and the US on December 17; Australia on December 26; and China on January 23.
