Pakistan School Attack 2014 - On Tuesday, feared Taliban militants attacked a military-run school in Peshawar, a northwestern Pakistani city. The attack was the worst offensive that struck the nation in over a year. According to the reports, majority of the victims were students in grades 1 to 10.

The Pakistan school attack 2014 occurred in the morning hours. Yahoo! News reported Police officer Javed Khan said about half a dozen of Taliban gunmen entered the school and began shooting at random. Army commandos promptly arrived at the school and the blasting exchange began.

The appalling violence was carried out by quite a small number of militants from Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistani Taliban, a group attempting to oust the government. The incident sent dozens of injured victims flooding into local hospitals as stunned parents searched for their children.

According to Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak, there were 84 people dead and around the same number were also injured. As reported by NBC News, when the Pakistan school attack 2014 erupted, around 500 students and educators were believed to be inside the site.

"The gunmen entered class by class and shot some kids one by one," a student who was in school during the attack said.

"They burnt a teacher in front of the students in a classroom," a military source said. "They literally set the teacher on fire with gasoline and made the kids watch."

The province's health minister Shahram Khan reported the 2014 Pakistan school attack has killed two teachers and an army official. Two attackers were also killed.

The authorities believed the Pakistan school attack 2014 was the terrorists' retribution for killing hundreds of innocent tribesmen during repeated army operations in provinces of South and North Waziristan and the Khyber Agency, all of which were restive regions along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, CNN reported.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the attack was a national tragedy. According to The Guardian, gunfire and helicopters were heard outside the school as troops surrounded the building. However, details were vague in the unfolding situation and it was unclear what was going on inside.

TTP spokesman Muhammad Khorasani told Al Jazeera that six suicide bombers had been sent to the school. He also added the attackers had been given orders to allow the youngest students to leave but kill the rest.

The Pakistan school attack 2014 is still an unfolding violence and the death toll is currently rising. The attack was condemned by India and the UK. With home minister Rajnath Sungh saying the incident was a "real face of terrorism" while British Prime Minister David Cameron said the attack was horrifying.
