Shane Montgomery Found - The body of a 21-year-old West Chester University senior has been found in the Schuylkill River just over a month after he disappeared from a pub in Manayunk, Ph.
Shane Montgomery's body was found shortly after midday by members of the Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit, who have been diving in the frigid water to search for him for many weeks now. According to local sources, the body was recovered 3-4 feet deep, just 800 yards from where his keys were found last month.
Shane Montgomery's family members, who were present at the banks when his body was recovered, have released a statement to thank the groups that provided assistance during the search. "Today we have done what we promised. We found and brought Shane home," the statement posted on Facebook said. "We want to thank everyone for their support, prayers, and love and ask that they continue to pray for our family at this trying time. At this time we ask that you please respect our privacy. We need time to mourn together as a family."
Capt. Gerry Boylan, who led the divers, noted that while Shane Montgomery's family is "very despondent", he is glad that the search is over and that the family has a chance to find closure. "We know the family has been hit hard," he said.
Montgomery went missing in the wee hours of Thanksgiving Day after he was kicked out of a local pub due to a disturbance. Reports indicate that he was not intoxicated when he left his friends at the pub. It is unclear how Montgomery ended up at the bottom of the freezing river. The police have not released any evidence that shows he may have been under threat. Montgomery was last seen on surveillance camera entering a parking lot near the Schuylkill River.
The search for Shane Montgomery has made the headline all over the country. There had been a reward of about $65,000 for anyone who could provide information on his whereabouts.
Capt. James Kelly says it is unclear what may have happened to Montgomery. According to Capt. Kelly, he could have wandered out of the view of the camera and anything many have led to his death.
