DASH Diet has been once again ranked on top as the best overall diet for five straight years. It outshined popular diet plans including Paleo, Weight Watchers and the Mediterranean Diet. On Tuesday, aside from being the best overall diet, U.S. News and World Report stated the DASH Diet was also chosen as the top diabetes diet.
Though Weight Watchers remained on top as the best diet for weight loss, DASH Diet still outpaced it as the best overall diet and is also considered as the best plan for healthy eating. According to FOX News, DASH was developed to lower blood pressure without medication. DASH Diet also defeated HMR (Healthy Management Resources) low-calorie, meal-replacement plan and Jenny Craig.
"The DASH diet has been our top diet overall for five years now and this is the fifth year we are evaluating and ranking diets," U.S. News & World Report senior health and wellness editor Angela Haupt said. "Our experts, who rate these diets for us, say it will end up being very good for your waistline, in addition to your high blood pressure, because it is such a common-sense, balanced diet."
Making DASH Diet on top of the best overall diet list, it scored 4.1 out of 5, Hollywood Life reported. Aside from its benefits in fighting hypertension and diabetes, it also aids in cardiovascular health. DASH Diet also put importance on nutrients like potassium, calcium, protein and fiber and centers on a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy.
TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) diet, which is developed to lower cholesterol levels, came in second in the best overall category, Today reported. It was then followed by the Mediterranean diet, Weight Watchers that is also considered as the best commercial diet plan and easiest diet to follow, and the Mayo Clinic Diet, which each tied for third place.
The Paleo Diet that mainly focuses on meat, fish and vegetables and the four-phase Dukan Diet were tied at the opposite end of the scale.
To compile the annual list, NPR reported that a panel of two dozen diet, nutrition, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes and food psychology specialists ranked 35 eating plans. The diet plans are judged according to its sample menus and published medical studies to rate the overall top diets as well as the best for weight loss, diabetes, heart disease and the easiest to follow.
Though DASH Diet doesn't restrict the entire food groups, one should still limit or eliminate high-calorie, sugary, and fat-laden foods. The diet also recommends limiting salt intake.
And while the DASH Diet is great for your heart and nutritionally complete, it can still cost a lot of time and money.
