After five seasons, "Covert Affairs" has been cancelled by NBC Universal-owned cable network, USA. The network announced that the spy drama would not be renewed for a sixth season on Jan. 6, 2015. According to USA, they opted to drop the series because of the season finale's low ratings.

USA network's "Covert Affairs" is a spy action-drama series that starred Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham. Its first season premiered on July 13, 2010. Despite favorable reviews, USA decided to cancel the show this 2015.

Last December, executive producer Chris Ord expressed his sentiments to TVLine saying that he and fellow EP Matt Cornan would not be delighted if the season 5 finale was the series' last episode.

"We want the show to continue," he said. "We're very proud of this finale. So at least we feel if we didn't come back, we'd be going out on a high note. We don't really like to think about it in those terms."

"For us, these characters and the actors we're working with are so infinitely talented that we think we could keep telling stories forever," he added. "Maybe we're delusional in that sense, but we just love this show so much. We don't like to think about it in terms of the end."

The cancellation of the "Covert Affairs" was due to the show's low ratings, in which its fifth season finale drew just 1.59 million viewers compared to its first season premiere of 4.88 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the globe-trotting spy drama series' live-plus-same-day ratings was the deciding factor for USA to drop its renewal.

USA Network SVP Ted Linhart made the "Covert Affairs" cancellation announcement on Twitter, Rickey.org reported.

"Sharing the news that COVERT AFFAIRS will not return for another year," Linhart posted. "Thanks to the cast, crew & fans for a great 5 seasons."

While the series' stars, Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham thanked the fans for their support on social media. "Thanks for all love for @CovertAffairs I will miss it but am so happy to have made so many great friends through it. Love you guys, xp," Perabo tweeted.
