Wichita Tornado Damage: Preliminary Estimates Put Loss At $283 Million [PHOTOS]

A tornado sweeping through southern Wichita, Kan., on Saturday left in its wake significant damage, but no major injuries. City and county officials have told the media that a preliminary estimate of the overall loss in the Wichita area is about $283 million.
Officials told the media that Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems facilities took a direct hit that left six buildings with significant damage and four others with major damage, according to the Kansas City (Mo.) Star.
That report also noted the Oaklawn area and a mobile-home park also took direct hits. Preliminary reports indicated 100 trailers in the mobile-home park were damaged when the storm hit shortly before 10:30 p.m. CDT. Two homes were destroyed, and several others were damaged in the Oaklawn area, the Star reported. Thousands of customers have been left without power.
