Good job, Emma Watson! After the 24-year-old "Harry Potter" actress impressed the world with her UN HeForShe speech last September, Watson has once again made headlines after she delivered another inspirational gender equality speech at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland on Friday, Jan. 23.
As the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson took the center stage for her remarkably poignant discourse about the HeForShe campaign. According to Vogue, the HeForShe movement is a UN initiative that targets to involve men in the gender equality issues.
During the speech, Emma Watson spoke about the influence and the impact the campaign had on her life. She also encouraged men and boys to join and support the crusade that fights for equal rights, dubbed as the "IMPACT 10X10X10."
"I have been stunned by the response," the British actress said to her listening audience, as quoted by Yahoo! Celebrity. "The HeForShe conference was watched over 11 million times, sparking 1.2 billion social media conversations, culminating in the #HeForShe hashtag becoming so popular that Twitter painted it on the walls of its headquarters."
Emma Watson also stressed that men should make a commitment about the campaign. She urged them to make it public so the story can be shared. She said that "IMPACT 10X10X10" is about "concrete commitments to change, the visibility of these commitments, and its measurability."
"I've been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me [to] tell me to keep going, and that they want to make sure that their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have power and equality, economically, and politically," the Brown University graduate stated.
The new HeForShe "IMPACT 10X10X10" program was announced at the press conference attended by Emma Watson, several world leaders and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Time revealed.
"The groundswell of response we have received in support for HeForShe tells us we are tapping into what the world wants: to be a part of change," Watson said during the press conference. "Now we have to channel that energy into purposeful action. The pilot initiative provides that framework. Next we need all country leadership, as well as that of hundreds of universities and corporations to follow HeForShe's IMPACT 10x10x10 so as to bring an end to the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally."
Meanwhile, The Telegraph reported UN Women Head Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon echoed Emma Watson's speech.
"Women alone cannot fight the deeply entrenched stereotypes in our society. But together men and women can turn the tide of inequality," Mlambo-Ngcuka said. "The fight to end gender-based injustices has to be timebound. It cannot be an open-ended struggle."
While Ban said, "Our world will not change until men think differently about their roles and what it means to be a man. We can do that most successfully when we enlist men to speak to other men."
In a world where only very few celebrities use their fame for a great cause, Emma Watson definitely made her voice be heard to encourage and inspire to make a difference for a better world to live.
"Women share this planet 50/50 and they are underrepresented, their potential astonishingly untapped," Watson concluded. "I'm here to ask you: What is the impact you can have? How, what, where, when, and with whom? We want to help. We want to know. And we want to hear from you."
