High School Bus Rolled - At least 9 people, including several students, who were on a high school bus that flipped on its side after an accident on Interstate 5, have been taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
According to Washington State Patrol, up to 12 high school basketball players and 3 coaches from King's High School in Seattle were in the vehicle when the accident occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night.
The driver of the bus, 53-year-old Deborah J. Clark of Everett, told highway patrol officers that she lost control after experiencing a brake failure just as she was about to join Interstate 104. The school bus allegedly hit a curb before it rolled over on its side.
Washington Patrol State Trooper Mark Francis has revealed that the school bus carrying the boy's basketball team was taking them home to Shoreline after a winning game in Mount Verno. Reports indicate that after the accident, all occupants of the school bus were able to extricate themselves without any assistance.
Investigators are reportedly digging into why the high school bus rolled on its side. While its driver Clark, who is said to have sustained some injuries in the accident, claims that it was caused by a brake failure, Washington State Patrol officers reportedly found out that the brake of the bus is working fine. Despite the inconsistency, officer Francis says it is unlikely that alcohol played a role in the accident.
Interstate 5 remained closed for more than 6 hours after the scary accident before it was reopened on Sunday morning - just before dawn.
There has been no statement from the authorities at King's High School about the accident. King's Knights won Lynden Christian boy's basketball team by 63 - 74.
