Ahmed Al-Jumaili - A 17-year-old African American man has been arrested in Dallas for the murder of a newlywed Iraqi immigrant last week.
Nykerion Nealon, who is also known as 'Kaca,' was reportedly arrested by the police after one of his friends, who witnessed the incident, identified him as the shooter, according to Maj. Jeff Cotner. Reports indicate that the police found cartridges which matched shell casings from the crime scene in Nealon's home.
The murder of Ahmed Al-Jumaili sparked outrage within the Muslim community in the country especially since it occurred amid a wave of attacks and protests against Muslims in the country due to terrorist activities in the Middle East and elsewhere.
But officials have dispelled concerns that the murder of Al-Jumaili was influenced by the fact that he is a Muslim or was from Iraq. Police say it is unlikely that Nealon personally knew Al-Jumaili. The teenager and three of his friends are reported to have been searching for a shooter, who attacked his girlfriend's apartment complex earlier in the day, when he encountered Al-Jumaili and shot him.
Al-Jumaili, who had been in America for just 20 days before his death, was reportedly outside admiring the snow and taking pictures with his wife and brother-in-law when the incident happened. Reports indicate that Al-Jumaili hid behind a truck, but was hit in the chest by a bullet that pierced through the side of the vehicle. He reportedly fell down as he ran away from the shooter into his apartment building nearby.
Nealon and his accomplices were caught on the surveillance camera of a nearby building as they fled from the scene of the shooting. At the moment, it is unclear if any charges would be brought against Nealon's friends who accompanied him to the shooting. It is unclear if the police have arrested them also.
Al-Jumaili's father-in-law Mohammed Altaae shed tears during the press conference to announce that Nealon had been arrested. "We're looking for a safe place...What he got was a bullet in his heart," Altaae said.
Alia Salem, representative of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Dallas has expressed gratitude to the police, the media and the local community for their support. "We just want to see justice happen here and this is the first step in that," she said.
