Bruce Beresford-Redman - A former producer of reality TV show 'Survivor' has been convicted in Mexico for murdering his wife in 2010 during a Cancun beach vacation.
According to Quintana Roo state prosecutor Gaspar Armando Garcia Torres, on Thursday, 43-year-old Bruce Beresford-Redman was found guilty of the crime and subsequently sentenced to12 years in prison by Judge Victor Manuel Echeverria Tun.
Daily Mail reports indicate that Bruce Beresford-Redman's mother said the former producer was also ordered to pay a fine of 43,000 pesos ($2,800).
According to reports, the murder of Monica Bruce Beresford-Redman was discovered in 2010 after her body was found dumped in a sewer cistern at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, where she, her husband and their two children were staying on vacation.
The vacation-turned-fatal was reportedly supposed to be an attempt for the couple to repair their marriage, which wasn't going to well after Monica learned her husband had cheated on her.
Monica's family released a statement through their lawyer, Alison Triessi.
"It has been nearly 5 years since they lost their beloved sister," Triessi said. "Not a day goes by that they don't miss her terribly and nothing will bring her back, but they can finally say that she has received the justice she deserved."
However, the Beresford-Redman family also issued a statement in response to the outcome of the trial, which they describe as a "gross miscarriage of justice."
"This is a disservice to Monica's memory, this is not the justice she and Bruce still deserve and that we continue to demand," the statement posted on Facebook read.
Reports indicate that the family plans to appeal the verdict.
Bruce Beresford-Redman maintains his innocence. However, Mexican investigators say he killed his wife "by asphyxiating her" in their hotel room on April 5, 2010.
"I didn't kill my wife, I really didn't" Bruce said from behind bars during a jailhouse interview with CBS's 48 Hours Mystery. "I can't imagine how anyone who listened to everything said could possibly think I had anything to do with killing my wife."
