Jimmy Fallon is back from his two-week vacation and he has a unique story to tell. Apparently, the host of "The Tonight Show" sustained a ring avulsion injury. Fallon said that he almost lost his ring finger because of the accident.

According to Inquisitr, Fallon said that he tripped on a rug and he tried to catch his fall. Upon getting up, he saw that his finger was "sideways." He then immediately wrapped a towel around his injured finger and went to the emergency room, where he was informed that he didn't actually break his finger but, instead, he suffered from an injury known as ring avulsion.

OrthoBullets defined ring avulsion injuries as a "sudden pull on a finger ring that results in severe soft tissue injury ranging from circumferential soft tissue laceration to complete amputation." The mechanism is quite simple — the injury usually happens when a wedding band or any ring for that matter gets caught in a moving object or a machine. Fallon got his injury differently; hence, he thought he just broke his finger. The damage usually extends to the vessels of the fingers.

Reuters has learned through Fallon's story that the odds when someone sustained a ring avulsion injury are not good. Fallon added, "Usually, they just cut your finger off."

Fallon went through a grueling 6-hour microsurgery to save his finger and according to the comedian, the doctor needed to take a vein from his foot to be able to restore the blood supply in his finger. After the surgery, Fallon spent 10 more days in the hospital. He also said that it will probably take two months before he can feel any sensation on his ring finger.

Fallon said that he has had newfound appreciation for his life because of how easy it can be taken away by something as insignificant as this incident.
