Professional wrestling superstar Roman Reigns was assaulted by a member of the audience on Saturday during a special WWE event at Save-On-Foods Memorial Center in Victoria, B.C.
The incident took place during Reign's match against Bryan Wyatt as part of the WWE Summer Slam Tour. During the bout, a 31-year-old male fan who was sitting at the front row took out a replica of the Money in the Bank briefcase and threw it into the ring, Bleacher Report has learned.
The object struck Reigns at the back of his head which then prompted members of WWE security to rush to the fan. The referee who was covering the match also got out of the ring to help the security personnel.
Aside from members of the entertainment company's security team, the local police force of Victoria also responded to the scene.
The fan was immediately apprehended and thrown out of the venue. According to another audience member, who submitted his eyewitness account to Wrestle Zone, Reigns appeared stunned after the incident.
However, a few moments later, the match resumed with Reigns beating Wyatt.
According to the Washington Post, the object thrown by the fan is an exact replica of the Money in the Bank briefcase sold by WWE through its online store for $74.95.
Based on the investigation by the Victoria police force, the fan, who was not named, threw the briefcase after he was urged by other members of the audience to toss the object.
He immediately apologized for his actions and no charges were made against him. However, due to the incident, the WWE has banned him from attending future shows, The Province reported.
This is not the first time that a fan interfered during an event or assaulted a WWE wrestler. In 2013, during an event in Johannesburg, South Africa, a man approached Randy Orton and struck him from behind.
The suspect was taken to court and was ordered to pay a fine or serve 30 days in jail, according to WWE.com.
