Good news to all "Baywatch" fans! The notorious slow-motion beach runs that became a pop-culture phenomenon in the '90s is reportedly getting a reboot. While "Baywatch" was the most watched television shows globally, the upcoming reboot is a movie version.
"Baywatch" has made actors Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff a household name. So, who will follow in their footsteps?
As "Baywatch" is set to celebrate the 26th anniversary of the show in September, here are 5 scoops we've learned about the upcoming movie version reboot of the series.
1. Cast
Zac Efron, 27, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, 43, are reportedly in talks to join the cast of the film. According to Daily Mail, while Efron's involvement with the reboot is still unconfirmed, Johnson has already signed up to star in the film, which is set to be a comedy. In fact, he confirmed his involvement in Oct. 2014 through a shirtless Instagram post.
"This is my beach bitch!" Rumors are true... we're making #BAYWATCH the movie. Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo running on the beach... #WhoNeedsMouthToMouth #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha," he captioned his post.
2. Synopsis
The new "Baywatch" movie will depict the story of a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard, who will be portrayed by Johnson and who is forced to collaborate with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon, Hollywood Reporter revealed.
In addition, it was also reported that the movie "21 Jump Street" was the natural inspiration for this project.
3. Production
Filming of the "Baywatch" movie will commence in early 2016, most likely in February, E! News noted. The project was first proposed in 2012, but has undergone various changes behind the scenes before Paramount Pictures announced in October 2014 that they intended to move forward with the movie.
4. Producers and Director
Seth Gordon is reportedly helming the movie. While Johnson will produce the film along with his partner Dany Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions, Variety noted. Additionally, Montecito Pictures and Beau Flynn are producing as well. Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Greg Bonnan, on the other hand, are the executive producers. As per Variety, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift wrote the latest draft of the script.
5. Rating
The upcoming "Baywatch" movie reboot promises an "R Rating," Vanity Fair has learned.
While the details for the upcoming "Baywatch" movie reboot have been vague, it's also uncertain if any of the cast from the original television series will reprise their roles in the film.
