Floyd Mayweather Jr., whose net worth stands between $400 million and $650 million, is consistently the highest paid sports personality in the world. Despite having few endorsements deals, the 38-year-old professional boxer can easily increase his fortune by fighting. And though he announced his retirement, he left off his prolific career on such a high note.
On Saturday, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who has an estimated net worth of $400 million as Celebrity Net Worth listed, claimed his 49th win via a unanimous decision against Andre Berto. After the action-filled faceoff at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, all three judges ruled in Mayweather's favor, Los Angeles Times revealed. And with his undefeated career spanning two decades, Mayweather confirmed that he was retiring from boxing.
"My career is over," he said, as per FOX Sports. "It's official."
Perhaps the best boxer of his generation, Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. has shown an extraordinary mix of speed, power and natural instincts every time he steps into the ring and delivers blow-by-blow punches. Due to his unmatched skills, Mayweather has won an unprecedented six boxing championships in five different weight classes: Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, Welterweight twice and Super Welterweight during his career.
As of late, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has the perfect 49 wins-0 losses record, 28 of which by knockouts. His astonishing record equals the perfect record of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano, embellishing his reputation as the best boxer of his generation.
Despite Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s net worth that he potentially earned through his boxing successes, he is not as financially stable as you many would think. According to The Richest, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said the world-renowned American boxer owed $6.1 million in back taxes. He was also sued by a Florida real estate developer, claiming the boxing champ owed $1.7 million for the purchase of an $8.5 million mansion.
As of June 2015, Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s net worth was listed as $650 million. Thus, Mayweather said his retirement in boxing won't affect his fortune since he has plenty of money and his health is more important than breaking world championship records.
"I'm leaving the sport with all my faculties," Mayweather said, CBC Sports quoted. "I'm still smart and I'm still sharp."
