Uber made an announcement on Wednesday that it will be opening a new global headquarters in Oakland.

The location of the seven-story building, soon to be Uber's headquarters, will be in the Sear's old building, at presently known as the Uptown Station at 1955 Broadway Street, near the 19th Street BART station. The office space measures 330,000 square feet with an additional retail space of 50,000 square feet, Forbes reported.

It was bought — the amount was not disclosed — from Lane Partners, a real estate agency. Other than this, the company reportedly plans to open two more offices in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighbourhood.

"We are excited to deepen our roots across the Bay by investing in the revitalization of historic downtown Oakland and to become a permanent part of the fabric of the East Bay community by adding thousands of jobs at our Oakland site," Renee Atwood, Global Head of People and Places at Uber, said in the statement.

"The Bay Area is our hometown," she added. "We are proud our global headquarters is going to include Oakland."

Uber anticipates to start moving its employees into the new office sometime in 2017, according to Bloomberg.

"I am excited to welcome over 2,000 Uber employees and the economic impact they will bring to our community," Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said.

Uber's director of real estate and facilities, Adony Beniares, said that technologists, product developers, human resources, operations, sales, marketing and business development are the kind of employees Oakland corporate office will have.

About 5,600 people are now being employed by high-tech companies in Oakland, Contra Costa Times has learned through the Oakland Chamber of Commerce's report. This initiative by Uber will reportedly increase the number of tech workers Oakland City by nearly 50 percent.

The office of Uber in Oakland will become a co-headquarter, since the company will retain and continue to operate its facilities in San Francisco.
