Selecting the right executive for the company is one of the most vital decisions a company has to go through. That's why, as stated in the website Board Works International, the company oftentimes has to take the most comprehensive approach just to ensure that the one who gets the position is the best candidate possible.
Hiring executives is indeed vital and stressful. But it is more dreadful if the people behind the search are less experienced than their candidates. What do they have to do in order for the job hiring process be a success? Here are some of the tips young CEOs have to consider:
Face their weaknesses
According to Harvard Business Review, it is just natural for a person to feel insecure or worried about his or her ability especially when compared to someone that has more superior experience. But though it's natural, it's still not healthy. Young CEOs must learn to overcome that negative feeling and not dwell on it for so long. Or else the feeling might reflect towards the person he or she will screen which is not good in creating the perfect ambience for an interview.
Check the front door and backdoor references
For final candidates, it's important that the CEO must never forget to do reference checks by himself. The process is just like what it is during the interview process with the backdoor references included. Backdoor references are extremely useful especially in getting unbiased view. Unlike front door references which are clearly committed in giving positive information regarding the candidate. That's why both of them are important. Information gathered will help the CEO in making the decision if the candidate fits the criteria or not.
Hire based on the appearance and impression
If the young CEO were to have difficulty in screening the candidates by factors like past work history and other credentials, appearance and impression can also be the perfect basis, as stated in the Bhorowitz. "It sounds silly that anyone would hire an executive based on the way they look and sound in an interview, but in my experience look and feel is the top criteria for most executive searches," according to Ben Horowitz, a cofounder and Partner of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
Executive management hiring is not easy. If the company were to hire great people, and avoid employee turnover, young CEOs have to remember that coordination and communication are the keys. Consider and follow these tips will be of great help.
