Psychonauts 2 officially ended its crowdfunding campaign via Fig today and raised more than its goal. The sequel to the 2005 platformer raised a total of $3,829,024; there goal was to raise only $3.3 million. This made it the largest video game crowdfunding target goal ever.

About $1,874,000 of the amount raised came from investments, while about $1,954,000 came from people who chose rewards. GameSpot reports that more than 20,000 backers have helped raise the total amount of over $3.8 million.

According to VentureBeat, crowdfunding is one of the initiatives of developer Double Fine to come up with the money needed to make the sequel. The estimated total cost of such sequel is between $10 million and $13.5 million. The rest of the funding will come from Double Fine and from unnamed external partner.

Fig is a crowdfunding site that allows contributors to actually earn a profit based on revenue earned by the game. Meaning to say, those who helped in raising the $3.8 million will soon see their fair share one the game starts to earn.

Although the sources are on its way, developers say that Psychonauts 2 game won't be released until 2018.

To lessen the anxiety, the PlayStation 2 version of the first Psychonaut is on its way to the PlayStation 4. It will officially be available for PlayStation 4 this spring, and a virtual reality Psychonauts game should hit PlayStation VR later this year.
