The 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards is an accolade given by the SAG TV and Radio Artists to recognize their performances in film and television. The SAG has honoed Idris Elba and gave the top prize to the movie Spotlight.
Idris Elba is a British actor known for his roles in American Gangster, Thor and The Pacific Rim, was recently awarded for Best Supporting Actor in Beasts of No Nation. The actor that plays Heimdall in Thor was also awarded for his work in the BBC TV series Luther.
When he was awarded, he poked fun at the controversy on the recent Oscar uproar that the awards community lacked diversity. "Welcome to diverse TV", said Elba as a joke.
Elba has been the actor that was predicted to make this year's Oscar run after being nominated for an SAG, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA but he eventually didn't make the cut.
However, the biggest prize was awarded to the movie Spotlight. The critically acclaimed drama that focuses on a group of journalists that uncovered the horrifying truth behind the church. The film was awarded for Best Ensemble.
What was probably evident during this year's 2016 SAG Awards was the fact that the guild has used the ceremony as a pushback to the Oscars. The Atlantic calls it the "Anti-Oscars".
The SAGs have collections of ballots from over 160,000 TV, film and radio actors and it has caused controversies to the Oscars by awarding their top prize to Spotlight and also nominated and awarded diverse talents. Evidently, the talented actors of color are said to be not making their attendance to this year's Oscars on February 28.
The much awaited Academy Awards will have Chris Rock as this year's host and it was reported that he is modifying his monologue to fit the recent Oscars controversy.
