Ravi Shankar, the Great Indian Music Maestro Dies at 92

The Indian music legend, Ravi Shankar, aged 92, passed away Tuesday at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, U.S. He was suffering from breathing difficulties for which he had undergone a surgery. However, he could not fully recover from the same, reported BBC News.

His daughter and wife said that the surgery could have granted him a new life but unfortunately he did not respond to the treatment.

"We were at his side when he passed away"

"Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. He will live forever in our hearts and in his music," they told BBC news

Shankar's daughters are both great musicians. Anoushka Shankar and her father were nominated for the 2013 Grammy awards. His other daughter, Norah Jones, is already a Grammy winner.

Ravi Shankar brought great popularity to Indian music. He earned immense international fame through his collaboration with "The Beatles." He also performed at the Woodstock and the 1967 Monterey Pop festival.

Shankar has some great film scores to his name. Satyajit Ray's "Apu" (trilogy), Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" and a fused project with Philip Glass for the movie - "Passages" are his most appreciated pieces. Ravi Shankar was also honored with the Bharat Ratna- Jewel of India, which is the highest civilian citation in India.

He was described as a "national treasure and global ambassador of India's cultural heritage" by Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister, reported BBC News.
