If you hear the title "digital marketing executive", then you should know that that is one of the hottest jobs on the tech market right now.

Kristine Spence never thought she'd be in digital marketing. Those words didn't exist back then but because the world is changing, methods have to evolve as well. All types of industries are being subjected to changes in order to succeed and digital marketing is just one of those changes that someone with tech experience can take advantage of.

When you hear of marketing, you might think of sales and advertising - so what can a professional do with that kind of career growth?

Spence has chosen to evolve along with technology. Her career started to grow as well. She had a degree in marketing but didn't know what "digital marketing" means in the 90's. In the 21st century, everything has gone digital and her knowledge base from what she learned on paper may not be enough. She had to learn again. She studied email marketing, search marketing, Google advertising, banner ads and all types of online advertising.

Going digital is the key to a successful marketing strategy for most companies and the demand for that kind of skill is already high. Chris Taylor, director of executive search at Onward Search explains that companies are now looking for social media savvy talents, have experience with search engine optimization and online social media advertising.

The market is clearly different right now which also means that the need of companies are different and constantly evolving. Most of the demand for these specialized roles is coming from marketing, PR and advertising agencies, not from firms with in-house marketing departments, Taylor adds, though there is demand across all industries, not just IT.

What you need to know though is that educational programs have not yet caught up with today's marketing needs, even though there are schools that offer certificates in digital marketing.

There's a digital marketing skills gap right now. Would you be able to fill that void?
