David Beckham is quite a busy man these days. After finishing his stint at L.A. Galaxy with an MLS Cup championship, he is returning to Europe to play for Paris Saint-Germain, but not before touring China as an ambassador for his sport.
While in China, Beckham wowed fans by lifting up his shirt to reveal Chinese characters tattooed on his body that read: "Life and death are determined by fate, rank and riches decreed by Heaven." Of course, the crowd was thrilled to have the toned footballer show off. He did so at the request of a student, who apparently knew of his penchant for ink.
Beckham's other half, celebrity Victoria Beckham, is not with him on this trip. The gig in China is expected to improve both the sport's cachet as well as the star's power and reach in Asia. With so many soccer fans in the most populous nation on earth, Beckham will do well to gain more Chinese admirers.
During an off day, Beckham had a little fall while demonstrating how to kick a ball. Fortunately, he was not harmed, but looked slightly sheepish at taking a spill. But we assume the athlete is used to taking spills, after all it's part of the game.
Some wonder if Beckham's trip is designed to steer attention from corruption and match-fixing that has been rampant in China. Whether or not that is true, Beckham's visit has been a wonderfully lighthearted distraction for Chinese fans. His five-day visit takes him through Beijing, Qingdao and Wuhan.
