As you build your career, you will undoubtedly take risks. Some may be calculated, others may be a little bit out there. Risks are an essential part of your life and especially your career, but you still have to be smart about them. Monster thinks there are risks that could turn into the mistakes that destroy your career.

We all take risks in our careers. We ask our bosses for better pay. We tell our employers about better offers we have gotten and essentially threaten to leave if we are not compensated. Sometimes, we aren't even being entirely honest about these things. But when are you taking the risks too far, and when could they do irreparable damage to your career?

Here are mistakes that could end your career.

1. Rushing to leave

Many people rush this one. They're faced with a horrible work environment, or what they think is an impossible boss situation - and they bail. As an adult with a job in what is a competitive market, be slow to leave your job. Consider if there are ways you can make it work; ways you can live with it. The next step in your career should not be impulsive, it should be planned. Have something else lined up. Be rational. Have a plan. Don't make sudden decisions you might regret.

2. Risking your reputation

Office scandals may not seem like a big deal. Illicit relationships or defrauding someone at work may seem like a risk you can take, but never forget that if there is something your career cannot survive, it is your reputation. The respect you need from your co-workers, employers and potential recruiters is a precious thing. Guard it with your life. You can get back a job, but a bad reputation is, in most cases, irreversible.

3. Being obsessed with success

It is an ironic fact that almost every successful person out there is successful because they are hardworking, or passionate - usually both. Look at your career like a series of opportunities, chances to better yourself and serve those around you. The humbler you are, the more chances you have of getting at the top.
