Not many people can make their own dream job. But for a career woman like Claudia Abercrumbie, it was possible.
A local Cincinnatian, Claudia Abercrumbie grew up in Walnut Hills and was schooled at the University of Cincinnati. She was an undergraduate that received the Darwin T. Turner scholarship. This was the start of her journey towards her dream job that would make a difference in other people's lives.
Looking into her past, writer Kate Murphy asked about her experiences. "My family was not well off at all and I truly believe if it had not been for that scholarship I wouldn't have been able to attend," Abercrumbie explained. "My own experience in receiving a scholarship is part of what drives me to want to do it for others."
She may have had a difficult start but she was able to get an MBA at Indiana University and worked in Procter & Gamble's Marketing Department, according to Cincinnati. Later on, she dabbled in Events Management and raised money for scholarships at the UC Foundation. Her work experiences, she determined, drove her to success. She loved the idea about obtaining funds for specific causes. Which is why she started her own business in 2005, called The Abercrumbie Group. The company manages events in the community. But times were tough and she almost gave up until she spoke to someone who inspired her to create her own signature event during Black Music Month in June. She wanted to "... to teach our community about the rich history of African-America musicians in our city and our state."
And the rest is history. She didn't want to just earn a living. She wanted to make an impact. "Knowing that we were making a difference was my motivation to keep going," Abercrumbie said. "I was doing something important."
The Abercrumbie Group has grown and now puts on six signature events each year, including the Celebration of Black Music, All About Women, Cintas Business Retreat, OH-KY Construction Summit, a Healthcare Symposium, and Men of Honor.
Claudia Abercrumbie, a woman who started her career in marketing ended up making her own dream job that hosts charity events through her own business, The Abercrumbie Group.
