Are you fresh out of college and are already looking for a job? New college graduates find it difficult to penetrate the job market. The latest unemployment rate by the Economy Policy Institute has risen positively for fresh graduates aged 21 to 24 but that doesn't mean new college grads are having an easy time finding a job.
New college graduates are competing against other candidates that have better experiences and tenure. However, Dr. Josh Shapiro, the director of research and evaluation for the Center for Research on the Regional Economy at UC San Diego Extension, explains that "There are a number of bright spots in specific industries where recent grads should be looking at multiple attractive offers." It would just be a question of where to look.
According to jobs and recruiting website Glassdoor, there are plenty of hot jobs popping up in the finance, technology and professional services industries. These industries welcome fresh college graduates with a host of job opportunities. Glassdoor created a list through CNBC ranked by the median annual base salary that are now defined as career opportunities and open jobs for new college graduates:
1. Data Scientist (Median annual salary: $116,840). This type of job is high in demand. This kind of profession is a great choice for fresh grads because there's no need of data science training and experience. Coding and software bootcamps are available for non-experienced job seekers, instead. This kind of job role is required by major industries because it looks into the profitability of the business.
2. HR Manager (Median annual salary: $85,000). It's not all about hiring people. It's also about retaining people. Employee retention is just as important as recruiting top talent which is why recruiting young professionals who can share ideas to satisfy employees are wanted. A new college graduate can start off with a different HR job title like an HR coordinator but it all starts from there.
3. Marketing Manager (Median annual salary: $90,000). Marketing Managers often have diverse responsibilities, from managing existing products to developing new ones. This kind of position is exciting for fresh graduates. Companies are looking at younger marketing professionals that can offer unique marketing ideas.
4. Finance Manager (Median annual salary: $115,000). The Finance Manager is responsible for controlling the transfer and investment of funds. The finance industry has been growing these past few years and is looking at expanding the job roles to post-grads.
5. Nurse Practicioner (Median annual salary: $99,500) - There is a rise in the health care industry and companies are offering high compensation for fresh graduates who are trained in the role.
According to Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor, said new graduates should "cast a wide net during their job search." Doing so will allow them to "find jobs that will provide them with not only a great company culture but also the salary requirements and career advancement opportunities that can turn an entry-level job into a viable career path," he said.
