Caregiver Relief: How To Manage Stress, Tips For Taking Care Of Yourself

Being a caregiver can be stressful. Previously, JobsNHire reported that families caring for patients with dementia or Alzheimer's are suffering financially, with resources being drained daily, in order to care for their family member or loved one.
If they are not caring for the patient on their own, then they have hired someone who can do the job professionally. That's where caregivers come in. They take on the role of the aide in order to give the family members the peace of mind they need. These caregivers are trained to treat and care for patients that are mentally ill, have physical disabilities and the like. But that doesn't mean they do not experience the same stress level as families do (when caring for the patient on their own).
Which is why Mayoclinic has come up with a list of tips that can help caregivers manage stress to preserve their own health and well-being:
1. Accept Help - Be prepared with a list of ways that other people can help you. For example, one person would take the patient out for a walk a couple of times a week while the other will lead physical therapy.
2. Focus on what you are able to provide - Admit that you may not be able to do everything on your own. There is no "perfect" caregiver. Go back to #1.
3. Set realistic goals - Focus on smaller steps and do it one at a time. Make a list of priorities and establish a daily routine.
4. Get connected - There are other caregivers in your community. Find out if there are services or training available to help you.
5. Join a support group - This is related to #4. Networking can increase your chances of finding out how to deal with patients. It also creates meaningful friendships.
6. Seek social support - Never forget to stay connected with your friends and family. They will offer you the emotional support you need.
7. Set personal health goals - Establish a good sleep routine or find a physical activity you can indulge in. Fuel your body with healthy sustenance.
8. See your doctor - Get the recommended immunizations and screenings. You need to be healthy in order to take care of the patient
Remember that you are not alone.
