You Won’t Lose Your Job From AI, Some Say, Others Say, Yes You Would

Alistair Bathgate, CEO of Blue Prism, a tech company in the United Kingdom says that you are not going to lose your job due to artificial intelligence, any time soon.
However, other industry experts believe that as AI technology advances, jobs in some industry sectors such as retail, banks, offices and factories will have to go.
So, what's the real score?
In the first viewpoint, AI is not likely to take your job in the near future. Those who hold this view say that your work would even be more rewarding because of robots.
Bathgate's company concentrates on developing robotic process automation (RPA) software in the U.K. that performs administration and clerical tasks for businesses.
The O2 business of Telefonica, a client of Bathgate, uses approximately 160 units of his "software robots" to automate the company's 15 core processes which include order processing and credit checks. These robots perform the workload of almost 100 full time employees, says Bathgate.
But he said that companies do it not so much as to cut costs than to add value to their products.
"What we found is that people don't use [the software] for cost-cutting, they use it for adding business value," Bathgate said in a CNBC phone interview.
"So where work is displaced, the humans who were doing that work before tend to get reallocated to new, more important stuff and more suitable to their skills," he added.
On the other side of the coin, those who believe AI will replace humans in the workplace are equally staunch in their stand.
"According to some scenarios, A.I. will quickly replace many forms of complex knowledge work ranging from lawyers to librarians, professors to policy analysts," said Andre Spicer, a professor at Cass Business School.
"The ATM of tomorrow is going to replace the teller," said Andy Mattes, CEO of software company Diebold. "It can do approximately 90 percent of what the human being can do and it's going to be your branch in a box," he added.
You may not wait many years to see which of the two scenarios will appear in our future world.
