Data Scientists: 4 Biggest Misconceptions About Them
By Jane Reed | Apr 12, 2016 04:33 AM EDT
Previously, JobsNHire reported about how the job role of a data scientist is sexy. However, have you ever thought about what others think of them? There are certainly misconceptions about their job. Some of them come from their own employers when it comes to business expectations. CIO has it that there are preconceived notions that a data scientist has to be an analytical, intuitive and detail-oriented individual.
But some people think it's just a desk job full of numbers. Here are 4 misconceptions about the job of a data scientist:
1. It's just about collecting data
Organizing and collecting data is a crucial skill for a data scientist. But data scientists are also required to present data. They must have strong presentation skills. They're not just there to crunch and understand numbers. They should also know how to interpret data. Presentation skills are an over-looked quality in this job role.
2. Data Scientists are developers
Some data scientists do have developmental background. However, some do not. Asking anyone to take action based on data analysis means asking them to have trust in the analysis. And this is where presenting the data and the approach used to analyze the data becomes so important -- it's about building initial trust. Technology is fast becoming a huge part of any business and it would be wise to have them devote to presentation and explain data strategies.
3. One centralized team can handle every aspect of data
The term data scientist is often used collectively for anyone who touches data frequently. But in principle, it is helpful to think of one data science group as being the data architects or engineers that are collecting, transferring, organizing, and storing data for usage while the other data science group is heavy on problem-solvers that make use of the data. The bigger the business, the more you may need to think about creating an entire department for data and partner with IT.
4. Data won't change
Technology right now is moving fast which also means that data is always changing. Technology has forced businesses to change. Data is continuously exploding. Forbes has it that data affects all types of industries. Which is why part of every company's data strategy should include considering the future of your corporation and the role data will play in your overall growth.
