National Doughnut Day started in 1938, when the Salvation Army wanted to raise money to honor the female volunteers, or "Lassies", that supported the soldiers during World War I. They gave the soldiers helpings of delicious meals, and of course, provided them with doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme will give away free doughnut of any kind to every person who comes into the stores while supplies last. Only at participating locations, though, check out which store is nearest to you.

If you can't get a Krispy Kreme, try to get one from LaMar's. And if you do buy something, part of your purchase will be donated to Oklahoma tornado victims!

You can also go to Dunkin' Donuts and get a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage.

If you don't want to drink something, Tim Horton's also giving out free doughnuts with any purchase, but you'll be needing the coupon here.

Hope you get your fill of sugary creaminess today. While you're at that, like Entenmann's facebook page to win free doughnuts for a year!
