Officials from Niger's paramilitary police in a suburb of Niamey claimed that a shooting erupted late Tuesday near a college campus. The residents near the event were crouching to avoid the gun battle in progress.

Karidjo Mahamadou said that the shooting was near the Ecole de Gendarmerie located on the north of the city. The police college shooters had not yet been identified.

Niger has been attracting continuous terrorist attacks. The largest attack was on May 23, when suicide bombers killed 36 people by attacking a military base and a French uranium mine. On June 1, the jihadists attacked a Niamey prison, to free al-Qaida's North African branch. 22 prisoners escaped together.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, an army base in the United States was under lockdown due to a shooting. An instructor at an Army medical training school in Texas was shot by her husband who was arguing with her.

Alvin Roundtree has been identified to be responsible for the army base shooting. His wife is now in stable condition after being shot by a 0.45 caliber pistol.

Federal prosecutors have charged the army man with domestic violence. He is due to appear in court on Thursday. If convicted, the army man may face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

"[The man's argument with the Army medical training school instructor] started out as a conversation," said Col. Randy Anderson. "He came into her office space, and then she took him outside of the building."

That's when the army base shooting occurred, according to the authorities.
