Though the recession has been subsiding and new jobs are being created day-by-day, many Americans are still asking the question, "Where can I get a job?" A new study by IHS Global Insights answers that question.
Even though most cities are still years away from total recovery from the recession, some cities in the U.S. have already reached their pre-recession job count, including college towns, oil centers, and military base communities.
Of 363 U.S. metropolitan areas, 98 of them now have more jobs than the pre-recession peak, and an additional 11 metros will join the party by theta end of the year.
States that will have fully recovered major metropolitan areas by 2015 include Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming.
However, the projections show that 61 metros will not be fully recovered until 2021.
San Jose, New York, Denver, Indianapolis, Boston, Baltimore, and Durham, N.C. are the major cities that have recovered to their pre-recession employment.
Many areas that are slow to recover have been severely affected by booms and busts in the housing market. Areas like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Tallahassee are severely affected and might not recover until 2017 or 2019.
