Nintendo Confirms Plans For Video Production

Nintendo will soon be producing films in the coming years. Apparently, fans can expect its first film to be released within the next two to three years.
IGN reported that Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has confirmed in an interview with Asahi Shinbun, via FarmboyinJapan, that the company has plans to invest in video production. It was also revealed that they are exploring a system where they can do as much as they can independently.
Last year, Shigeru Miyamoto also said that Nintendo is open to movie adaptations based on its highly-popular franchises. In 2014, a Sony hack revealed that "Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad was already in discussions with the company to produce an animated "Super Mario Bros." film.
In a series of tweets, CEO of Tokyo-based Kantan Games Dr. Serkan Toto clarified what Kimishima said in the interview. According to him, the Nintendo president did not provide a specific time frame for the release of its first movie.
"Some misinformation about Nintendo's move into 'movies' and 'Hollywood' floating around," Toto posted. "That Asahi article should be read with care."
"Also note that he does NOT give a time frame," he added. "He says the first title won't be ready this year but also won't take 5 years."
Toto also noted that Kimishima did not reveal which character will be adapted into film. "Note that Mario and Zelda are just brought up by the writer as examples," he wrote.
According to The Verge, there was a WSJ report that Netflix was working on a live-action series based on "The Legend of Zelda." Nintendo denied the rumors, though.
Meanwhile, in another report by IGN, Kimishima has emphasized that the highly-anticipated Nintendo NX is a new console. It reportedly won't follow the conventions of the company's current hardware.
"The NX is neither the successor to the Wii U nor to the 3DS," Kimishima said, via NeoGAF user GSR. "It's a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U, but I don't feel it's a pure replacement for the Wii U."
