There are some who think that the hospitality and tech industries are very different. Apparently, there are career tips that we can glean from a hotel worker turned business owner.
In an article for Motto, social media agency SocialFly CEO Stephanie Abrams Cartin shared the top three career tips that she has learned during her time as a hotel worker. SocialFly is a full-service digital marketing and public relations agency which specializes in Social PR.
"Most of the skills I learned while working in hospitality have not only translated perfectly to what I do now; they have been instrumental in helping me find success in running my own business," she wrote. "Working both with customers and behind the scenes, I was able to learn the intricacies of what it took to effectively run these complex operations."
First, understand that communication is vital to your career goals. Not only with this help you build stronger relationships with others and your network, it will also provide opportunities for you to learn from your coworkers and managers.
Develop your communication skills by speaking to clients, teammates and executives in the same professional manner you want them to talk to you. Anticipate their needs and proactively offer information to them.
Second, teamwork will always work. Cartin shared an experience when a team member got tied up with an issue and another employee would step in to help. This ensured that everyone, including the customers, had a smooth experience.
Third, be willing to go above and beyond what is expected of you. Pay attention in making sure that your product, service and interaction are of the best quality.
Business Insider collated a list of career tips from highly-successful people. One of those who shared their advice for this year's graduates is SoulCycle CEO Melanie Whelan.
"Get a job and work hard," she said. "You are going to learn a ton in whatever that job is, so don't stress too much about what it is or where it is. Just take a job and put your head down, work hard, raise your hand for anything anybody asks you to do."
