In the Zimmerman trial on Tuesday, July 9, the gunshot wound is examined in the testimony of a forensic pathologist. Evidence seems to support the defense’s theory of the tragic altercation between the late teen Trayvon Martin and the former neighborhood-watch volunteer George Zimmerman, that Martin was on top of Zimmerman when Zimmerman fired the fatal shot in self-defense at the unarmed Martin.

An expert on forensics for the defense, Dr. Vincent Di Maio testified that the medical evidence of the case is “consistent with Mr. Zimmerman’s statement.” Di Maio offered a version of the events that was consistent with the defense’s theory of the Feb. 2012 fight between Zimmerman, 29, and the late Martin, 17. Di Maio also said that Martin lived for no more than three minutes, being conscious for only about 10 to 15 seconds.

The head injuries of Zimmerman were probably caused by the head making contact with the concrete. Such dangerous injuries testify to Zimmerman’s claim of having his head banged into the sidewalk by Trayvon, Di Maio said.

Furthermore, the pathologist testified that the bullet hole in Martin’s shirt showed that the muzzle of the gun touched only the shirt, and that the gun was at least 2 to 4 inches away from the skin of Trayvon Martin.

“So … the muzzle of the gun was against the clothing. But the clothing itself had to be two to four inches away from the body at the time Mr. Martin was shot,” he said.

When describing what happened in the fight, Di Maio mentioned that he did not consider the accounts of several witnesses that Zimmerman was the aggressor in the struggle. When pressed by cross-examination, the forensics expert testified that the six head injuries could have been caused by rolling on the concrete in the struggle with Trayvon Martin.

The main issue at hand was whether it was George Zimmerman or Trayvon Martin that was screaming in the famous 911 call. Such information was still being debated since both the parents of Martin and Zimmerman claim that it was the scream of their own son.

It is possible that the defense will finish presenting its case by the end of this week. Soon the jury will have to decide the ruling of the second-degree murder charge on George Zimmerman.
