Recent Nintendo NX news revealed that the console will not be a digital-only media. It will also have physical media. This led to speculations on whether the device will bring back cartridges or continue with discs.
In Nintendo NX news by GamingBolt, it was reported that GameStop CEO Paul Raines revealed that the highly-anticipated console will have physical media. The announcement was made during the company's earnings call last month.
"I would say that the fact that there are rumors of that type just confirms for you that this is an important console for next year," Raines said. "It will have physical media, we will play a role in it, our pre-owned business will also play a role. So we're excited about that."
VG247 previously reported that Nintendo's deal with Macronix seems to suggest that the NX will have game cartridges. It is believed that Macronix is developing a new line of 32nm chips, which are slightly smaller than 3DS' 75nm ones. These are believed to be for the Nintendo NX.
Moreover, this also appeared to confirm speculations that the Nintendo NX may be a hybrid console. The device could feature a handheld to replace the 3DS and a home console as replacement for the Wii U.
"We saw those rumors," Raines added, "and so obviously we can't comment on them. I don't think we know anything about it anyway."
Mike Mauler, the company's executive vice president, did share his thoughts on what physical media he wants to see for the NX.
"The only difference [between discs and cartridges] would be on the refurbishment and pre-owned side," he said. "And actually, cartridges are much simpler to refurbish and repackage. So there is somewhat a little bit of an advantage if it went in that direction."
It has been previously confirmed that "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" will be coming to Nintendo NX as well as the Wii U.
