John Cena hosted the ESPY Awards this year which was held at the Microsoft Theater on July 13, Wednesday and poked fun at Roger Goodell during the event.
During the annual ESPY Awards, WWE star John Cena used his opening monologue as a platform for jokes. He compared various story lines from the NBA and NFL seasons to pro wrestling - something he is particularly good at. He ended with saying that "The one place the WWE has you beat, the one thing we have that you don't: Vince McMahon. A maniacal billionaire pulling the strings behind the scenes who uses every trick in the book to manipulate things to his advantage, any way he can. That is something that is way too crazy for real sports."
Then, suddenly the screen behind the pro wrestler flashed a snap of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Cena finished by saying, "Or maybe we have more in common than you think."
It was clear that Cena had his eyes set on Goodell. According to reports, Goodell has a traack record for handling scandals in the NFL that has been a little shakey.
Cena also had the Redskins on his sights. It was the third consecutive year that the ESPY's have included a joke about them. When stand up comedian Hannibal Buress appeared on stage, he was playing a man who traveled back in time from 2026. Buress wore white Crocs which are the "Steph Curry 34s" during the time and a silver football jersey adorned with logos for ESPN OJ, Rocky XXXVIII and Over Armour.
Cena, appearing shocked asking Buress what kind of jersey he is wearing. To which Buress replied, "The Redskins finally changed their name," Buress said. "Now they're the Washington Jews."
This was not the first time that the Red Skins were targeted for good fun. In 2015, comedian Joel McHale poked fun at the flag. In 2014, Drake hosted the show and also took a shot with his opening monologue. John Cena is no stranger to acting or humor in his career and he knows it is all good fun.
