Snapchat introduces its first hardware product "Spectacles" which is a pair of sunglasses that can record 10 seconds of video at a time.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the device is a one-size-fits-all that is priced at $130. It will be released in the colors of teal, black, and coral, and will sync wireless to smartphones or iPhones. The device was unveiled by CEO Eval Spiegel at a conference room in California.
Since the company is looking to offering services beyond the app, Snapchat was also rebranded to Snap, Inc, Snap Inc. posted on their website that the sunglasses will make it easy to create memories, and that the innovation features one of the smallest wireless cameras in the world.
The sunglasses, when worn, will start recording a 10-second video once a button near the hinge is pressed. Spiegel added that the sunglasses experience is way different than using the camera of a smartphone since it offers a first-person-vantage. The device uses a 115-degree-angle lens which is a closer representation of the human vision.
Siegel cited a test of the prototype with fiance Miranda Kerr in 2015, and after seeing the videos, he mentioned that it is much like a memory and "It's one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it's another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I'd ever come to feeling like I was there again."
Snapchat has over 1,000 employees and the app has over 150 million daily users, mostly aged 13-34 years old. The company took years to develop the device and Siegel refers to the product as a "toy" for the users. It is sold through limited distribution to determine if users will enjoy their experience with the wearable camera.
